Leonard School - Moravia PA

Text Coming Soon!

The Leonard School opened near the village of Moravia in 1854, on property donated by its namesake Harvey Leonard. Mr. Leonard apparently taught Sunday School classes in the building for a time as well. It was one of many one-room schoolhouses serving the children of North Beaver Township. It was finally closed in June 1927 when its pupils and those of the Brewster School near Bessemer started attending class in the North Beaver Township Consolidated School in Mount Jackson. The last teacher at this school was J. B. Houk. It was sold a month later and became the new home of North Beaver Grange, an organization founded in early 1915. It was later abandoned and I believe it sits vacant near the new Interstate 376 (toll road). The photo above includes teacher Joseph Gilmore, who taught at the school in the early 1920’s. Several members of the McConahy family are in this photo. (c1922) (Photo courtesy of Sherry Slater) Full Size
