Union Pacific Tea Co./Anderson & Anderson Grocery - New Castle PA

Text Coming Soon!

Joseph M. Anderson (1861-1944), who was born in Ireland, came to Pittsburgh in 1882 when he was twenty-one years old. He started working in a grocery store and about a year later he relocated to New Castle, where he opened the Union Pacific Tea Company in the old City Hall building on East Washington Street. His store sold all sorts of fancy teas and coffees. Joseph, who married and had two children, is pictured with his son Glenn (1887-1970) in the photo above. Joseph operated this store until about 1916, when along with Glenn he opened the Anderson & Anderson Grocery store at #36 North Mill Street. Joseph, who became a well-known local merchant, was in business in New Castle for an amazing sixty-one years until he passed away at the age of eighty-two in February 1944. His son continued to run the grocery store until he retired in 1957. (c1902) Full Size

  1. I have a tin plate about 8” across. On the back it is stamped:
    “presented and copyright 1907
    The union pacific tea co.”

Wondered if it is worth anything to you.

The front is a picture of a girl in the center with children and bears having a snowball fight around the edge. I would be glad to send you pictures.

    thank you.

  2. The Union Pacific Tea Company was formed in 1873 and headquartered in New York City. Owned by Robert Parks McBride, it was a large importer and wholesale and retail distributor of tea and coffee in the late 1800s and early 1900s. At its height, Robert McBride owned 106 stores. The Union Pacific Tea Company store in New Castle is listed as one of these branch stores. Most likely, Mr. Anderson was the Manager of this store and an employee of the company.
