The First Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1893 with twenty-five members led by the Reverend Harvey Bair. The Pittsburg Company donated property at Fourth Street and Park Avenue and a wooden frame church (shown in an architect’s rendering above) was built – after some delay – and dedicated under the supervision of the Reverend Francis B. Cutler in April 1896. (c1902) Full Size

The congregation of the First Methodist Episcopal Church on Fourth Street grew quickly in the early 1900’s. (1916) Full Size

The church was soon outgrown and it was decided to build a new edifice at a different location. In 1920 congregation purchased property at the northeast corner of Crescent Avenue and Fifth Street. Construction commenced in mid-1925 and the impressive new church (shown above) was in partial use on the first Sunday of 1926. The new church was not formally dedicated until July 10, 1927. The church became known as the First United Methodist Church in about 1968 and the congregation will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2018. Full Size
