Sometime in the late 1990’s the City of New Castle, Pennsylvania, cleaned out its storage/archives and threw tons of papers and photographs into the trash. I heard from a former city employee that boxes and boxes of photos taken as part of the downtown redevelopment initiative of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s were among the photos tossed out. These included photos of most of the buildings in the downtown area. Shame on you New Castle officials! These vital pictures should have been donated to the New Castle Historical Society or another worthy entity to ensure they were preserved. Anyway, among the photos fortunately rescued from the trash are thousands of mugshots taken by the New Castle Police Department in 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s. I have a small collection of these mugshots and attached arrest cards and posted some of them here.
