The Volant Bridge, a covered span built about 1891, carried Main Street in downtown Volant over the Neshannock Creek. (c1905) (Courtesy of Todd Clark Collection) Full Size

The covered bridge, and another smaller one nearby across the millrace of Volant Mills, was torn down and removed in early 1932. A temporary bridge was erected nearby while construction of a modern span commenced in May 1932 and opened for traffic later the year. (c1910) (Courtesy of Todd Clark Collection) Full Size

  1. Hi Jeff:

I think your second (lower) bridge picture is of the covered bridge that still exists on Covered Bridge Road (County #1009), SW of Volant. I’m not sure how to upload a picture I received from the Lawrence County Historical Society. Essentially, their bridge shows large open windows and a different and exposed infrastructure for the main Volant village bridge. Listings on the internet call your picture “Banks Bridge.”
