Text Coming Soon!

Jacob J. Dean was born in Scott Township in November 1853. He initially worked as a carpenter before coming to New Castle and opening a retail grocery business – White & Dean – with his brother-in-law R. C. G. White. Dean went into business alone in 1887 as the J. J. Dean Grocery Co. He eventually shifted to the wholesale grocery business and supplied products to other stores and restaurants. He relocated several times and eventually opened up a large facility on Produce Street. He took on partners and incorporated his company in 1917. He passed away in April 1925 at the age of 72. The New Castle News of April 27, 1925, reported, “Mr. Dean was a Christian in the broadest sense of that term. His acts of charity and beneficence were not restricted or confined to any order or class.” The company he founded remained in business for many years. Full Size
